The Bachelor of Business Administration in Tourism and Hospitality Management is a 3-year, full-time program aimed at high school graduates, both with and without prior education in the area of tourism or hospitality management. The study program has a strong focus on innovative information communication technology and sustainable management strategies and is the only undergraduate university degree of its kind in Central Europe. It is designed for students from all over the world who want to lay a solid foundation for their career in the tourism and leisure industry. All courses are taught in English.

The program

MU’s faculty includes leading Austrian and international academic staff. Lectures and seminars delivered by scientists and professionals from abroad form an integral part of the curriculum. Courses on current trends in the industry keep students on top of recent developments. The wide variety of nationalities among faculty and students provide the basis the exciting intercultural life on campus.

The curriculum develops the students’ academic, professional and personal skills promoting the spirit of enterprise and effective service delivery and responsible management are the cornerstones of the program. Sound academic education is perfectly combined with business related training, for only a mind rooted in the real world can solve the current and future problems of the industry. Besides conveying a sense of service delivery and hospitality, the BBA program aims at preparing students for taking leading positions in the tourism and leisure industry worldwide, as well as to run their own businesses profitably.

After one year of profound business education and a 4-6 months internship in the 4th semester in a national or inter-national company, students have the chance to enhance their studies with subjects such as Event Management and e-Marketing. A special short track program is available for students transferring from other management or tourism oriented programs. Study abroad opportunities at other renowned academic universities, such as the University of Central Florida (US), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (China) or the University of Surrey (UK) are also possible. The study program allows intakes in spring (March) and fall (September).

Qualification to enter the study program

  • High school leaving certificate (e.g. A-levels, Matura, Abitur, International Baccalaureate or equivalent)
  • CV and motivation letter
  • Proof of proficiency in the English language: e.g. TOEFL (540 Paper-Based Test or 207 Computer-Based Test or 76 Internet-Based Test) OR IELTS (band score 5.5: no sub-score below 5.0) OR Cambridge Certificate (1st certificate in English)

MODUL Career – The network for enhanced career opportunities

MODUL Career is a platform exclusively for students and alumni of MODUL University Vienna and the Tourism College MODUL of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Its aim is to assist students with finding an internship as well as to support them in career planning and development. MODUL Career is also a networking platform for alumni of both institutions. MODUL Career has a large number of international partners in the tourism and hospitality industries who offer internship opportunities to MODUL students. With their well rounded education, MODUL students and alumni are counted among the favorites for top positions. More than 200 graduates from the two institutions leave every year to start national and international careers in the areas of tourism and hospitality, public governance and new media technology. Today, the MODUL Alumni network consists of over six thousand graduates of the Tourism College MODUL and MODUL University Vienna. The network offers vocational and industry contacts and the possibility to exchange knowledge and experience.

MODUL Career services are communicated via www.modulcareer.at and include:

  • Supporting current students in career exploration, internship, part-time and full-time job searches and specialized advising needs
  • Offering support to graduates in career planning and career development
  • Providing a networking and information platform for MODUL alumni through newsletters, events and panel discussions
  • Organizing excursions to tourism and career fairs as well as industry events

Sustainability as fundamental principle

MODUL University Vienna has identified sustainability as one of its key principles. Sustainability represents an integral part of the curriculum and research agenda, and is also reflected in the daily workflow. The university operates in a manner which minimizes environmental risk and adverse effects on the environment. The solar panels, pellet heating system and recycling system in the university building are evidence of sustainable living and thinking within the university. In addition, MODUL University Vienna was the first Austrian university to sign a contract with a renewable energy provider and is the only university in Austria compensating the carbon emissions for all professional trips undertaken by its faculty and staff. An internal ‘Sustainability Committee’ works to maintain and improve the university’s sustainability goals.

Significance of research achievements

MODUL University Vienna has been established and is recognized as a research-oriented educational institution in the Humboldtian tradition. Through its research focus, it can develop educational programs that provide its students with the innovative and future-oriented skills and capacities that will serve them well throughout their career. The goal of MODUL Research is to communicate the practical relevance of basic and applied research that is conducted by faculty and graduate students. At the same time, members of the faculty seek to engage in research projects that provide implementable solutions to problems that private companies, industry associa-tions, groups in civil society and governmental organizations have identified as important. MODUL University Vienna’s faculty has already been awarded several prizes for research projects – for example the Multimedia and e-Business State Prize 2008 in the category of Web 2.0 and social networks, or the UNWTO Ulysses Award 2009 in the category of Innovation for Tourism enterprises.
