What is the influence of family and neighbourhoods on the development of behaviour among youth? What are the effects of new approaches in junior education? Which method of analysis is most appropriate to which data problem?

General information and Field of Research

The purpose of the Research Master’s Programme in Behavioural and Social Sciences is to qualify students to conduct scientific research through thorough training in advanced theories and methods aimed at knowledge, skills, and understanding. In this Research Master’s programme, there is a strong focus on the development of scientific and academic skills. Accordingly, graduates are well prepared for PhD positions and careers as research scientists, primarily in academia, but also for research positions in public or private organizations.

The five specializations represent the research programmes that are consistently evaluated as among the best in the Netherlands. Each specialization emphasizes the integration of basic and applied research.

5 specializations:

  • Social and Organizational Psychology
    Combines and integrates Personality, Social, and Organizational Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
    Focus on investigating the causal mechanisms underlying the onset and maintenance of mental disorders
  • Sociology
    Focus on areas such as research in organizations, sociology of education, intercultural integration, social stratification or households
  • Education and Development
    Focus on the effectiveness of education and improvement of developmental processes
  • Psychometrics and Statistics
    Focus on the application of advanced statistical data analysis methods and their relationship with other methods

Together with your personal supervisor, you determine the focus of your own individual programme of study so that it suits your specific ambitions, talents, and interests. The programme is associated with the Graduate School for Behavioural and Social Sciences in which additional PhD training is organized.

Programme content

The programme takes two years (120 ECTS). The content is as follows:

  • General course that provides an overview of research within the Graduate School for Behavioural and Social Sciences 5 ECTS
  • Other courses 45 ECTS
  • Literature studies 15 ECTS
  • Traineeship 15 ECTS
  • Seminars 5 ECTS
  • Master’s thesis research project which may be extended to a proposal for a PhD project 35 ECTS

Career prospects

The programme is designed primarily for highly talented, motivated and ambitious students who are interested in pursuing a career in scientific research.

  • Conduct fundamental and applied research in the social and behavioural sciences
  • Further study and training for a PhD thesis
  • Employment in the public or private sector

Admission requirements

  • High performance during the Bachelor’s degree programme
  • Knowledge of relevant theories and statistics (including multiple regression and analysis of variance), and experience with statistical software packages
  • Preference for one of the five research groups
  • You may be invited for an interview with the Admissions Board in order to discuss your motivation and aspirations
