Are you intrigued by how chemical substances can influence human physiology? The Master programme in Drug Discovery and Safety takes a multidisciplinary approach to create the drugs of the future.

The Drug Discovery and Safety programme combines aspects of Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine, Genetics and Toxicology. The programme takes a multidisciplinary approach to develop new drugs. It makes use of the latest systems and developments in the fields of Computer-aided Drug Design, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Bio-analytical Sciences, Molecular Biology and Pharmacology, and Molecular Toxicology.

The Master’s programme in Drug Discovery and Safety trains you as a specialist in one aspect of drug development. You will also acquire extensive knowledge of other relevant disciplines and you will learn to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team. The challenges and opportunities of our era ask for bright scientists that are willing look beyond their own centre of expertise.

Graduates in Drug Discovery and Safety have excellent employment prospects and can generally expect to earn a good salary. This Master’s opens up a whole range of career opportunities. The most obvious are in medicinal research, the pharmaceuticals industry and hospital laboratories, but there are also plenty of opportunities with research institutes and government inspection agencies.

Tracks

Biomolecular Drug AnalysisIn this specialization, you will be involved in the development of new methods for analysing living cells – finding the proteins associated with particular diseases, for example. Or the quick and accurate measurement of large numbers of biological samples, such as those taken to test for performance-enhancing drugs in sport. You will also develop fully automatic systems for the study of interactions between drugs and proteins (High-Throughput Screening).
Computational Medicinal Chemistry & ToxicologyThis specialization is all about using extremely fast computers to study new molecules and to predict their properties and interactions with biological molecules. Even before a molecule has been created and tested, you will be able to forecast whether it is likely to have medicinal applications.
Drug Design & SynthesisThis specialization concentrates on the design and synthesis of new substances with improved or modified biological properties. These new compounds can form the basis for new medicines: the drugs of the future.
Molecular Pharmacology (Drug Discovery & Target Finding)In this specialization, you will investigate where and how a drug's molecule works in the human body. You will study the mechanisms by which a medicine has its particular effect. Research into the potential for new drugs is carried out at both genomic and proteomic levels.
Molecular Toxicology (Drug Disposition & Safety Assessment)In this specialization, you will study the causes and workings of the unwanted and sometimes toxic properties of substances. Are those substances absorbed by proteins? And how can they be metabolized with the help of enzymes? Does everybody have these enzymes? And what happens with a drug if your genes don't express that one key enzyme?

Scholarship

Huygens Scholarship Programme (HSP)Following a decision by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Dutch cabinet called for the termination of the Nuffic-run HSP and Libertas Support Fund as from 01-01-2012. This has no consequences for students currently receiving a scholarship or for the current application round.
