The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance offers three Master programmes in Law. The focus of these Master programmes is on European Law and they are all bilingual, meaning that classes and exams are carried out both in English and in French. Each Master is a two-year programme. A student can choose to either follow the entire two-year programme or follow only the second year of a specialisation. Students must meet the specific requirements of admission in both cases. Each Master offers two specialisations in the second year. Applicants must choose their specialisation during registration. The Master degree is awarded upon successful completion of the second year.

  • Master en droit européen - LL.M.
  • Master en droit économique européen - LL.M.
  • Master en droit financier européen et international - LL.M

The first year is a common programme to all three Master programmes in Law.

It serves to broaden the knowledge acquired during the bachelor studies and will provide students with a deeper insight into European law. With its emphasis on European, comparative and international law, the Master programme naturally reflects its proximity to several European institutions such as the Court of Justice, the General Court, the European Investment Bank, the European Investment Fund and the European Court of Auditors. Courses in the second year of the Master programmes are taught by experts from these institutions as well as other practitioners and faculty members. Courses in the first year are taught mainly by professors from the University.

The first year also prepares students for the requirements during the second year of the Master, where in each specialisation in-depth competencies and practical application of the relevant European law are achieved. An overview of the courses offered during the first year can be found under “Programme”. Teaching relies on problem-based learning methods. In addition, the possibility for participation in Moot Court competitions to train in a “real-life” application of knowledge is an integral part of the programme. Preparatory language courses are offered to students, as well as continuous language training during the year.

Specialisation in European Banking and Financial Law

The specialisation in European Banking and Financial Law of the Master in European and International Financial Law LL.M, offers a high level curriculum which covers both the theoretical and the practical aspects of this subject. The programme benefits from the support of prestigious private and public partners, at the European and national level. The proximity of the European Union institutions in Luxembourg and the presence of a major and dynamic financial centre, open to Europe and the World, makes Luxembourg an ideal setting – on a pleasant scale but very international – for gaining expertise in banking and financial law, an experience which will be appreciated in all of Europe.

European law is taught both as a subject matter (European Securities Law, European Banking Law, European Investment Funds Law, European Company Law) but also on a comparative basis. The programme includes lectures on Banking and Securities Law of several European jurisdictions (Luxembourg, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland), which are delivered by academics of excellent level from the best European Universities (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas, Geneva, Johann-Wolfgang Goethe University). These lectures are mainly introductory and designed to provide students with a general view of specific rules applicable   in several European jurisdictions. With the same goal in mind, given the international nature of financial law, the programme includes a lecture on American Securities Law, on Chinese securities law and a lecture on Islamic Finance, delivered by an academic from the Lebanese University (Beirut).

This program is fully-fledged and stands by itself. However, this program can also come as a follow-up or a preparation to a degree in banking and financial law in one of the Member States.

First-rate official partners

The specialisation benefits from the support of two major European banking institutions located in Luxembourg: the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Investment Fund (EIF). The degree receives also the support of several Luxembourg public institutions (Ministry of finance, Central Bank, Securities Regulatory Commission, and the Insurance regulator). The specialisation further benefits from the official support of the Luxembourg Banking Business association (Association des Banques et des Banquiers, Luxembourg), which is the professional organisation of the banking institutions in Luxembourg.

Finally, the specialisation in European Banking and Financial Law of the Master in European and International Financial Law LL.M is able to benefit from the support of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange and four prestigious law firms who rank among the very best of the Luxembourg financial centre and whose activities are highly international: the law firm of Arendt & Medernach, the law firm of Bonn, Schmitt and Steichen, the law firm of Elvinger Hoss & Prussen and the law firm of Linklaters Loesch.

Therefore, a large amount of lectures and seminars are delivered by first-rate practitioners from these law firms chosen for their individual expertise. The support from these partners guarantees the students that they get acquainted with the latest financial techniques.
